This question lands in my inbox more than you'd think, usually from someone who's just bought a Puffco, or been given one, and has a jar of flower sitting next to it. I get the appeal. I'm a dry-herb man first, I've vaped flower daily since 2018, and when I benched HerbVape's Puffco kit, the first thing I checked was whether any of it would take herb. None of it does, and the reasons are worth knowing, because they explain what to do instead.

Can It Take Flower? Device by Device

Why Puffco Devices Can't Vaporise Flower

It comes down to heat and design. A Puffco chamber is a small ceramic cup made to melt a sticky concentrate and vaporise it off hot walls. The factory heat settings run from about 490°F to 590°F depending on the device and setting, or roughly 254–310°C. Concentrates are made for that.

Flower isn't. Vaporising dried flower happens well below that range. Our temperature guide works in roughly the 160–210°C band, and a dry herb vaporiser is built to move hot air through ground plant material, or to warm it evenly from the walls, without it catching. Put flower in a Puffco chamber at Puffco temperatures and you're a long way past vaporisation. You're scorching it.

That's also why the e-rig and the dry herb vaporiser look superficially similar but aren't interchangeable. Same verb, different job.

What About the Proxy Flower Bowl?

This is the one that confuses people, because it's official and it has "flower" in the name.

The Proxy Flower Bowl is a small glass bowl that fits into a Proxy glass piece. Puffco describes it as adding "flower function to the Proxy Collection". What that means in practice: you light the flower with a lighter and smoke it through the Proxy glass, like any other pipe. The Proxy's electronics, heater and 3D chamber don't do the heating. It's combustion.

I'll say that plainly because some of the marketing around it blurs the line, and I've even seen it listed as "dry herb vaporisation". It isn't. If you want a pipe that matches your Proxy, it's a tidy one. If you were hoping it would turn your Proxy into a flower vape, it won't, and you'd be disappointed.

Third-Party Herb Inserts for the Peak Pro

There are aftermarket "dry herb atomisers" sold for the Peak Pro. Puffco doesn't make or endorse any of them. Three things to know before you go near one:

• Error codes. The Peak Pro's firmware checks the chamber it's talking to. At least one seller of these inserts admits its part makes the Peak Pro flash red and white, which is the chamber error code.
• Your warranty. Puffco's warranty excludes products used with aftermarket accessories it hasn't approved, and anything "improperly used, altered or tampered with". A 2-year base warranty is a lot to give up for a workaround.
• The Peak Pro's bowl isn't meant to come out. Puffco describes it as a sealed ceramic chamber that isn't removable. Anything that works around that is working against the design.

What Happens If You Try Anyway

I've had enough messages from people who tried to be able to tell you what to expect:

• Burnt taste and smoke. At concentrate temperatures, flower scorches or combusts. You get the harsh, acrid hit you bought a vaporiser to avoid.
• Residue and clogging. Plant material chars onto the ceramic and can clog the airpath. Concentrate residue dissolves in isopropyl. Burnt plant matter wedged into a small chamber is a much worse job.
• Chamber damage. Puffco's own wording on the Plus is "Dry herbs damage chamber", and the same logic applies to the other ceramic chambers. Chambers are wear parts with short warranties, so you'd be shortening the life of the most expensive consumable on the device.
• Error codes. A dirty or damaged chamber, or a third-party insert, is exactly what the red–white error is there to catch.
• Warranty trouble. Misuse and unapproved accessories are both exclusions.

If You Want Flower, You Want a Dry Herb Vaporiser

This is the honest pivot, and it's not a sales pitch. A dry herb vaporiser is designed from the chamber out for ground flower. The temperatures are lower and more precise, the airflow is designed for plant material, and the chamber is built to be emptied and brushed rather than soaked. You get the flavour of the flower without burning it. That's the whole point, and it's the thing a Puffco and a Flower Bowl can't give you.

What about one device that does both? Dual-use devices exist, but they tend to be good at one job and passable at the other. G Pen's Hyer, for example, is concentrate-first with a separate herb tank. My honest advice, from someone who owns more vapes than Sarah thinks is reasonable, is to keep the Puffco for concentrates and add a proper dry herb vaporiser for flower. Two tools that each do their job beat one that does both half-well.

Can you put dry herb in a Puffco Peak?

Not flower, no. The Peak, New Peak and Peak Pro are concentrate-only e-rigs. Puffco doesn't make a herb chamber for them, and third-party inserts cause red–white errors and put your warranty at risk.

Is the Puffco Proxy Flower Bowl a vaporiser?

No. It turns the Proxy glass into a conventional pipe that you light with a lighter. That's combustion. The Proxy's heater isn't involved.

Can the Puffco Pivot do dry herb?

No. The Pivot is a concentrate dab pen with a mini 3D chamber, and there's no herb option for it.

Will flower damage my Puffco chamber?

It can. Puffco's own guidance is that dry herbs damage the chamber, and scorched plant material is much harder to clean off ceramic than concentrate residue.
