The Proxy is Puffco's modular portable: a battery base with a 3D ceramic chamber that clicks into a glass pipe, or into any of the other Proxy glass pieces. It's a concentrate device from top to bottom, the portable sibling of the Peak e-rigs. If you've never used one of those, what is an e-rig covers the basics in ten minutes.

I'll be upfront. I'm a dry-herb man. I've vaped flower daily since 2018, and the concentrate side of HerbVape's shelves is the kit I came to later, when it needed someone to bench it properly. So this guide is written the way I'd want one written for me: what each click does, what each light means, and how to stop the thing sulking. Every spec, temperature and light code below comes from Puffco's own manuals and help centre. Where Puffco's own documents disagree with each other, I tell you so rather than pick one and pretend.

This guide covers the New Proxy (2025) first, because that's the one you're most likely holding. The original Proxy and the Proxy Core get their own notes wherever they behave differently.

Which Proxy Have You Got?

There are three generations in circulation, and they share more than they don't. All Proxy bases work with all Proxy glass, so your pipe, Bub or Droplet carries across.

One question comes up a lot: is there a Proxy Pro? No. Puffco's line is that the New Proxy has "pro technology" as standard, but it doesn't get the Peak Pro's 3DXL chamber or wireless charging. It charges over USB-C.

The base carries a 2-year warranty on every generation. The chamber is a wear part with a much shorter warranty (6 months on the New Proxy, 1 month on the original), which tells you everything about where Puffco expects the wear to happen.

Setup: Out of the Box

The New Proxy box holds the base, the 3D chamber, the Joystick Cap, the glass pipe, a loading tool, cotton swabs and a USB-C cable. The original Proxy kit added a carry case, and the black edition an Oculus carb cap.

1. Charge it. USB-C. Puffco puts a full charge on the New Proxy at around 2 hours. For the original Proxy, one Puffco article says 1.5 hours and another says roughly 2, so call it 1.5 to 2. The charging light shows Green, Orange or Red for full, half and low. On the original Proxy it can take up to 15 minutes before the light shows it's charging at all, so don't panic and swap cables straight away.
2. Fit the chamber. Line up the three prongs on the chamber with the base and seat it. Never force it. Puffco warns that forcing it can cause damage you can't undo.
3. Attach the glass. The base drops into the glass pipe (or your Bub, Droplet or other Proxy piece).
4. Pair the app (New Proxy and Proxy Core only). Install Puffco Connect, hold the button for about 6 seconds until the light pulses blue, then pick the device in the app. Custom heat profiles and Mood Lights need you to log in to a Puffco account. The original Proxy has no app, so skip this step.

Your First Dab, Step by Step

1. Unlock it. Hold the button for 3 seconds. The same hold locks it again.
2. Pick a setting. Single-click to cycle Blue, Green, Red and White. For a first go, use Blue or Green (the next section explains why).
3. Cold-load. Put the concentrate into the chamber before you heat it. Puffco recommends cold-loading and not overpacking, because too much material can leak down into the base. A small amount goes further than you'd think. If yours is sticky, a Hot Knife makes this part less of a faff (see the Hot Knife guide).
4. Cap it and heat. Joystick Cap on, then double-click. The light pulses while the chamber heats. Hold the button if you want to cancel the cycle.
5. Wait for the signal. It flashes and vibrates when it's ready. (Puffco's help pages say three times and the current manuals say twice. Either way, the buzz is your cue.)
6. Inhale gently, device upright. Slow, steady draws. Keeping it upright matters on a pipe-shaped device, because tilting it is how melted concentrate ends up somewhere it shouldn't.
7. Want more? Double-click again after the heat-up to boost: more time and more temperature. On the New Proxy you can set the boost amount in the app.
8. Swab it warm. When the cycle ends and the chamber's cooled a bit, a quick swab with a cotton bud and isopropyl stops residue building up. This is the habit that keeps the red–white error away.

One rule worth learning early: Puffco says not to start a heat cycle more than 4 times in a row. Chain them and you risk the overheating lockout (solid red for 5 seconds). Give it a breather between rounds.

Heat Settings: What Each Colour Means

Four factory presets, same colours as the rest of the Puffco range. On the New Proxy and Proxy Core the app can re-colour and re-tune them. So if your Green doesn't look like Green, someone has been in the settings.

The original Proxy's °C figures are my conversions. Puffco also has an older help article giving slightly higher approximate numbers for the original Proxy. I've gone with the printed manuals, which is what Puffco's current support page matches for the New Proxy.

When I benched the Puffco kit, I ended up living on Green, with Blue saved for the first session of the day, when I actually want to taste things. That's a preference, not a law. The general rule from our dab temperature guide holds here as well: start low, go up only if you need more vapour, and treat White as the exception. The higher you run, the faster the battery goes and the quicker the chamber gets grubby.

App settings (New Proxy and Proxy Core)

Through Puffco Connect you can change each profile's temperature and session length, adjust vapour density, set the boost, and change or switch off the lights. I'm an IT bloke, so a device I can configure like a router is catnip. But you don't need the app to get good results. The four defaults are sensible, and plenty of owners never change them.

Puffco Proxy Lights Meaning: The Full Light-Code Table

These are fixed firmware signals, the same on the original and New Proxy unless marked. The heat-profile colours are the factory defaults, which you can change in the app on the New Proxy.

If you see a pattern that isn't in this table, don't guess. Rainbow flashing, for example, is an original Peak code and doesn't belong to the Proxy. Check that the chamber is clean and properly seated, charge the device, and then talk to your retailer or Puffco.

Why Is My Puffco Proxy Blinking Red and White?

A Puffco Proxy blinking red and white has a chamber connection error. The base can't read the 3D chamber properly, and the usual cause is residue on the chamber or its gold contact points. Soak the chamber in 90%+ isopropyl alcohol for 20 minutes, never water, let it dry completely and refit it with the prongs aligned.

In order, this is what fixes it:

1. Let it cool. Switch it off and give the chamber time to cool before you touch it.
2. Take the chamber off and look at the gold contact points on the chamber and on the base. Sticky residue there is the usual culprit.
3. Swab the contacts on both parts with a cotton bud dipped in 90%+ isopropyl. Keep the base's USB port dry, and never flood or soak the base.
4. Soak the chamber in 90%+ isopropyl for 20–30 minutes. No water on the chamber, ever.
5. Let it dry completely. Isopropyl is flammable. Don't heat a chamber that's still wet, however impatient you are.
6. Refit it by lining up the three prongs and seating it gently. Don't force it.
7. Test it. Unlock, pick a setting, double-click. A normal pulse means you're done.
8. Still red and white? Chambers are wear parts. If you have a spare Proxy 3D Chamber, try it: if the error clears, the old chamber has had it. If a known-good chamber still throws the error, it's the base, and that's a warranty conversation with your retailer or Puffco (the base has 2 years' cover).

How to stop it happening again: swab the chamber after sessions, deep-clean it every time the battery runs flat, and don't overpack it. Overpacking is how material ends up on the contacts in the first place.

Troubleshooting: Other Common Problems

Blinking red (not white)

Symptoms: Three red flashes. Cause: Low battery. Fix: Charge it. Puffco says the New Proxy can be used while charging as long as there's some charge in it, but a full charge is the better habit. If it's solid red for 5 seconds instead, it's overheating: leave it to cool.

White flashes and no heat

Symptoms: You double-click and get several white flashes. Cause: The base can't detect a chamber. Fix: Remove the chamber and reseat it with the prongs aligned. If it keeps happening, clean the contacts with isopropyl as in the red–white fix above.

Nothing happens when you press the button

Symptoms: No lights, no response. Cause: It's locked, or the battery is flat. Fix: Hold the button for a full 3 seconds to unlock it. If that does nothing, charge it on a different USB-C cable and plug, and remember the original Proxy's charging light can take up to 15 minutes to show. If it's still dead after a proper charge, contact your retailer.

Concentrate leaking into the base

Symptoms: Sticky residue around the base or the contacts, and often a red–white error soon after. Cause: Overpacking, loading a hot chamber, or using it tilted. Fix: Clean the contacts with isopropyl on a swab (don't soak the base). Then cold-load smaller amounts and keep it upright while you inhale.

Harsh or burnt taste

Symptoms: Tastes scorched even on a fresh load. Cause: Old residue cooking in the chamber, or you're on Red or White. Fix: Deep-clean the chamber, then drop to Blue or Green. If a clean chamber on Blue still tastes off, the chamber may be worn out. It's a consumable.

The app won't find it

Symptoms: Puffco Connect can't see your Proxy. Cause: You have an original Proxy (no Bluetooth), it isn't in pairing mode, or your phone's permissions are blocking it. Fix: Check which model you have first. On a New Proxy, hold the button for about 6 seconds until it pulses blue. On iPhone, allow Bluetooth and Location permissions for the app.

Solid red after a few sessions in a row

Symptoms: Solid red for 5 seconds and it won't start. Cause: Overheating, usually from chaining heat cycles or leaving it somewhere hot. Fix: Let it cool. It comes back by itself. Next time, keep to four cycles or fewer in a row.

Before you contact support

• Is the chamber clean and dry, with the contacts swabbed?
• Is it seated with the three prongs aligned?
• Is it charged, and have you tried a different cable?
• Have you tried a spare chamber?
• Is the device between 0°C and 38°C? Puffco's operating and charging range is 32–100°F.

Cleaning the Proxy

I hate cleaning. It's in the canon. But the Proxy is honest about where the work is: the chamber and its contacts. Keep those clean and almost every error in the table above goes away. For the wider picture across e-rigs, see how to clean a dab rig.

The chamber

• After sessions (light clean): once it's cooled a little, swab the inside with a cotton bud and 90%+ isopropyl, including the gold contact points.
• Deep clean: soak it in 90%+ isopropyl for 20–30 minutes, then let it dry completely before refitting. Never rinse the chamber with water.
• Silicone parts (jacket, tether, cap) can go in the soak too. They swell in isopropyl and shrink back as they dry, so don't panic.
• Refit by lining up the three prongs, without forcing.

The base

• Swab the gold contacts and the airpath with isopropyl on a cotton bud.
• Don't flood it and don't soak it.
• Keep the USB port dry and free of isopropyl, water and dust.

The glass

• Soak it in isopropyl only, with no other cleaners and no abrasives. Then rinse it with water and dry it fully.
• Glass with water in it (like the Bub) should be emptied after the session so it isn't sitting there stale.
• Terrapipe owners: the Terrapipe is ceramic, and Puffco says to spot-clean it with a swab only, so don't soak it.

How often

Puffco's rule is simple: a proper clean every time the battery fully runs down, and immediately if it floods or shows red–white. My routine: a swab after the session, a soak when the battery dies, and a jar of isopropyl on the windowsill so I've got no excuse.

Proxy Accessories: What's Worth Having

Worth buying

• A spare Proxy 3D Chamber. It's the wear part, and it's the quickest way to diagnose a red–white error. You can also run one while the other soaks.
• Proxy Bub if the Proxy mostly lives at home. It's the mini-bubbler, and a small amount of water takes the edge off bigger dabs. It's the piece I keep set up at home.
• Proxy Droplet if you're out and about more. Dry glass, nothing to spill, more direct flavour.
• Proxy Joystick Cap or the Proxy Ball Cap. Caps go missing, and a Proxy without one is a worse Proxy.
• Proxy Travel Pack or the Puffco Travel Case if it travels. Loose glass in a bag is a short story with a sad ending.

Nice to have

• Proxy Travel Pipe and the Proxy Terrapipe, if you want an alternative to the standard pipe. Remember the Terrapipe is swab-clean only.
• A Puffco Hot Knife for sticky concentrates. It's not essential, but it makes cold-loading tidier. The Hot Knife guide covers it.

Know what you're buying

• Proxy Flower Bowl. This is Puffco's official flower accessory, and I want to be plain about it: it turns your Proxy glass into an ordinary pipe that you light with a lighter. That's combustion, not vaping, and the Proxy's heater and 3D chamber don't do the work. It's a tidy pipe if a pipe is what you want. It is not a way to vape flower with your Proxy. How do I turn on a Puffco Proxy?

Hold the button for 3 seconds to unlock it. The same 3-second hold locks it again. If nothing happens, it needs charging.

How long does the Puffco Proxy battery last?

Puffco quotes around 15 dabs per charge for the New Proxy, and the Proxy Core is rated for up to 15. Higher settings and boosts use it faster. A full charge takes around 2 hours over USB-C.

What temperature is Green on the Puffco Proxy?

On the New Proxy, Green is 510°F (266°C) by default. The original Proxy's manual also lists 510°F. On the New Proxy you can change it in the app.

Can I use my old Proxy glass on the New Proxy?

Yes. Puffco says every Proxy base works with every Proxy glass piece. The exception is the Proxy Core cup, which needs the New (Bluetooth) Proxy base.

Can you put flower in a Puffco Proxy?
