The Puffco Hot Knife is a battery-powered, heated loading tool. To use it, scoop a small amount of concentrate with the ceramic tip, hold the tip just above the centre of your chamber, then press and hold the button. The tip heats while you hold the button, and the concentrate melts off within seconds. Let the tip cool, then put the cap back on.
Triple-click to check the battery (green, orange, red), charge it over USB-C (about 25 minutes on the current model), and clean the tip with isopropyl on a cotton bud. Never soak it.
It won't vaporise anything. It makes loading the thing that does a lot less sticky.
Loading sticky concentrate with a cold metal dabber is like trying to put honey back in the jar with a teaspoon. It clings to the tool, then to your fingers, then to the outside of the chamber, and then to the contacts, where it causes errors. The Hot Knife fixes that single problem. It gently heats a ceramic tip so the concentrate lets go of the tool and drops into the chamber.
I'm a dry-herb man, so my first reaction to a heated loading tool was that it seemed a bit much. Then I benched HerbVape's Puffco kit and spent a week swabbing residue off chamber contacts. I came round. This guide covers what it is, the clicks and battery lights, how to load different textures, the cleaning, and the one warning about the ceramic tip that matters more than anything else here.
What the Hot Knife Is (and Isn't)
Puffco describes it as "an electronic heated loading tool", and says plainly that it is solely a loading tool. It isn't a vaporiser or a dab pen, and it isn't something you inhale from. It works with any banger, bowl or chamber: your Proxy, a Peak, a Pivot, or a quartz banger on a glass rig.
There are no temperature settings, and Puffco doesn't publish a tip temperature. Any figure you see quoted elsewhere isn't Puffco's, so I'm not repeating one. What matters is that it gets warm enough to release concentrate from the tip in a few seconds.
Which generation have you got?
Puffco launched the next-generation Hot Knife in March 2026. It has a reshaped glazed ceramic tip, a more ergonomic body, a more secure cap with a lanyard loop, an improved button, a triple-click battery check and USB-C charging in about 25 minutes. It launched in Onyx and Haze, and limited editions followed. Everything in this guide is based on Puffco's current manual. If you have the earlier model and something doesn't match, check the manual that came in your box.
Charging
- Port: USB-C.
- Time: about 25 minutes on the current model, according to Puffco's product and support pages. Older Puffco help articles give 30 minutes, and 30–45 minutes. That's why an older unit may take a bit longer.
- Charging indicator: the LED next to the button lights up while it's on the cable.
- Temperature range: use and charge it only between 0°C and 38°C (32–100°F). Don't leave it on a sunny dashboard or charge it in a cold shed.

That's the whole interface. There's no app, no presets and no boost. Coming from a device with four heat profiles and a light-bar menu, I found that refreshing.

How to Use the Hot Knife
- Check the battery with a triple-click. Green or orange, you're fine.
- Take the cap off and scoop a small amount of concentrate onto the ceramic tip. Scoop gently. Don't dig or lever (more on why below).
- Hold the tip just above the centre of the chamber. Not touching the walls and not resting on the rim: just above it, centred.
- Press and hold the button. Within a few seconds the concentrate softens and drops off the tip into the chamber.
- Let go as soon as it has released. There's no reason to keep heating an empty tip.
- Let the tip cool, then wipe it (see cleaning) and refit the cap. The tip is hot during and after use, so don't touch it and don't cap it straight away.
On the Puffco devices, this pairs well with cold-loading: loading the chamber before you heat it, which Puffco recommends for the Proxy. Loading by texture
Concentrates behave very differently on a tool. This is how I'd handle each broad type. None of it needs a setting, because there aren't any. It's about how much you scoop and how you scoop it.

The ceramic tip warning. The tip is ceramic, and Puffco warns it can fracture under pressure, especially on stiff or dense material. A broken tip can't be repaired, and your only option is to contact support. Scoop gently, never use it as a lever or a chisel, and don't drop it tip-first. Given my track record with things that can break, I keep the cap on it whenever it's not in my hand.
Cleaning the Hot Knife
This one is quick, which is lucky, because I hate cleaning. Puffco's instructions:
- Wait until it's completely cool.
- Wipe the ceramic tip with a cotton bud dampened with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol.
- Let the tip and the cap air-dry before you refit the cap.
- Wipe the body with a dry microfibre cloth.
And the don'ts, which matter more:
- Don't submerge, soak or rinse it in water or isopropyl. The electronics sit right behind the tip. This is not a chamber you can drop in a jar.
- Keep isopropyl away from the charging port and the electronics.
- Keep it away from moisture and humidity, so the bathroom windowsill isn't a good home for it.
- Clean it after each use. Residue left to cook on the tip next time is harder to shift and does the flavour of your next load no favours.

Troubleshooting
The tip isn't heating
Triple-click to check the battery. If it shows red or a low-battery signal, charge it. Also check you're holding the button: a single press doesn't heat it. If it's charged and still does nothing, contact your retailer.
The light bar glows red after heating
That's the charge reminder, not a fault. Put it on the cable.
The concentrate won't let go of the tip
You've probably scooped too much, or it's a stiff material that needs a moment longer. Hold the button a little longer with the tip centred over the chamber. Next time, scoop less. Two small loads beat one big one.
Concentrate ending up on the chamber rim or walls
The tip is either too high or off-centre. Hover lower and keep it centred. Residue on the rim and contacts of a Puffco chamber is exactly what causes the red–white chamber error on the Proxy and Peak, so it's worth getting right.
Chipped or cracked tip
Stop using it and contact support. Puffco says a broken tip can't be repaired. On warranty, Puffco's own pages don't agree: some say 1 year, others 2. Check with the retailer you bought it from.

Is the Puffco Hot Knife a vaporiser?
No. Puffco is explicit that it's solely a loading tool. It moves concentrate into a chamber. The device the chamber belongs to does the vaporising.
How long does the Puffco Hot Knife take to charge?
About 25 minutes over USB-C on the current model. Older Puffco articles quote 30 to 45 minutes, which may apply to earlier units.
What temperature does the Hot Knife get to?
Puffco doesn't publish one and there are no settings. It heats while you hold the button and stops when you let go.
Does the Hot Knife work with non-Puffco devices?
Yes. Puffco says it works with any banger, bowl or chamber.
Can I use the Hot Knife with flower?
