PAX Mini 2 portable vaporiser in Greenstone finish

Dennis M. · September 2026

TL;DR

The PAX Mini 2 is AirPods. Tiny. Premium. Beautifully designed. Does one thing very well. You're absolutely paying for the brand, and everyone on Reddit will tell you there are cheaper alternatives that technically perform better. But nobody can deny it's the most elegant, pocketable solution available. Like AirPods, the PAX Mini 2 is about the experience, not the specs.

  • Score: 7.5/10
  • Best for: Design-conscious users who want a vape that looks like an Apple product — because it genuinely does, maximum portability seekers — 89g, fits in a closed fist, smaller than most lighters, beginners who want premium simplicity — lip-sensing, motion standby, one button, stealth-first users who need the device to be invisible in public
  • Skip if: Flavour purists — conduction at PAX money when the Smono No.3 does convection for less, value-focused buyers — the "PAX tax" is real and r/vaporents will never let you forget it, battery-anxious users — a sealed cell this small gives about an hour of actual use, temperature control fans — four fixed heat modes instead of degree-by-degree control

Pull it from your pocket, draw, put it back. Ninety grams of aluminium that makes everything else look agricultural.

Pros

  • 89 grams. Closed fist. Full stop. The most pocketable premium vaporiser you can buy. Smaller than a lighter. Lighter than a phone. Pick it up and you genuinely wonder where the rest of it went
  • Industrial design is Apple-grade — anodised aluminium, clean lines, zero visual clutter. Sarah bought the Greenstone without asking. Nobody's done that with any other vaporiser I've owned
  • 22-second heat-up is genuinely fast — faster than most budget devices. Pull, wait, draw. The lip-sensing and motion standby mean it heats when you need it and sleeps when you don't
  • 3D oven screen redesign makes cleaning dramatically easier than the original Mini — the PAX cleaning curse is partially lifted
  • Colour options that people actually want — Onyx, Greenstone, Pink Crush. The Greenstone is particularly good-looking. This matters. If you're spending PAX money, aesthetics are the product

Cons

  • Conduction at PAX money is the elephant — the Smono No.3 does pure convection through titanium for less. The XLUX Roffu does convection with dual chambers for the same money. You're paying the PAX premium for design, not extraction
  • Fixed heat modes instead of temperature control — four modes with no degree readout on the device. If you've used any vape with actual temp control, this feels like going from a thermostat to a guessing game
  • The sealed battery is limiting — about an hour of real use, and PAX won't tell you the capacity. The Flowermate Aura has 2600mAh in a similar-weight body. The PAX tax extends to battery
  • No app support — the Mini 2 doesn't get PAX app features. The four heat modes are all you get
  • Small oven opening makes neat loading fiddly — fine grind, firm level pack, don't rush. Tom learned this the hard way

The Hook: AirPods

Sarah bought the PAX Mini 2 in Greenstone without asking me. "It's pretty and it fits in my clutch bag. That's all I need." She's not wrong. It IS pretty. And it DOES fit in a clutch bag.

But every time she uses it, I quietly think about what the same money could have bought.

The PAX Mini 2 is the AirPods of vaporisers. Anyone who owns a pair knows the sound quality isn't the point. The form factor is the point. The case flick is the point. The way they disappear into your ears and nobody stares. The seamless, effortless, slightly showing-off experience that makes the tech invisible.

Pulling the PAX from your pocket is the AirPods case flick — satisfying, effortless, slightly showing off. The anodised aluminium catches the light. The haptic feedback pulses through your palm. The lip-sensing heater activates as it touches your lips. Twenty-odd seconds from cold to clouds. It's choreographed. It's deliberate. It's premium theatre.

Every r/vaporents thread about the Mini 2 reads like an r/headphones thread about AirPods: "They're fine, but for the money you could get—" and the person wearing AirPods nods politely and doesn't switch, because the experience was never about the frequency response.

Tom held the PAX Mini 2 like it was made of crystal. "It's so small," he whispered. Then he loaded 0.5g into the oven and complained the flavour was weak. Tom. Half-pack lid. Read the manual.

We stock the PAX Mini 2 at HerbVape.co.uk — details and pricing up top, and the owner's guide for setup, temperatures and cleaning is further down.

Vapour Quality 6.5/10

Pure conduction. Stainless steel oven. 3D screen. Four fixed modes instead of a dial. This is conduction done as well as conduction can be done at 89 grams.

Mode 2 (193°C) is the sweet spot. Visible vapour, reasonable flavour, acceptable density. The 3D oven screen helps distribute heat more evenly than the original Mini's flat screen — you'll notice fewer hot spots and more consistent extraction across the bowl. Four draws with character.

Mode 1 (180°C) is a terp whisper, Mode 3 (204°C) trades nuance for density, and Mode 4 (215°C) is extraction cleanup. What each one is for, and the two-step routine that gets the most from a bowl, is in the temperature settings section of the owner's guide.

The conduction ceiling is real. The PAX Mini 2 will never produce the flavour clarity of a convection device. The Smono No.3 costs less and delivers noticeably better terp expression through titanium convection. The Roffu at the same money through quartz convection is a different league. You're not paying PAX money for vapour quality. You're paying for everything surrounding it.

What the PAX does well: consistency. Bowl after bowl, session after session, the output is predictable. No technique variance. No convection learning curve. Pack the oven, select a mode, draw. The same experience every time. For some users, that predictability is worth more than peak flavour.

The Strain Test

The AirPods question needs a controlled listen: identical jars, identical grinder, identical scales, with the strain pinned in place so the only thing changing is the hardware playing it. The Mini 2 has to prove it does more than play the song loudly enough to recognise.

Jack Herer — Sativa

The Flower: Same jar as every other device on this site. Haze × (Northern Lights #5 × Shiva Skunk), around 20% THC, terpinolene-led with caryophyllene and pinene behind it. Pale, spindly, hairy stuff that looks less impressive than it smokes — crack the jar and it's pine needles and lemon peel first, dry green herbs underneath, black pepper right at the back. Old-school in the way that means "aromatic", not "weak". It's the strain that shows you up: the top notes are fragile, and if a vaporiser can't hold them you find out in the first three seconds.

The Pack: 0.25g, fine grind, half-pack lid, pressed firm and level. Pack pressure matters more here than anything else you can control — a loose load channels, and the walls scorch whatever they're touching while the middle stays raw. The oven opening is small enough that a steady hand is the difference between a neat load and a fifth of your grind on the worktop.

Low Temp (180°C): Pine needles and lemon peel on draw one, and they are genuinely present — thin, but present. Draw two still has the citrus lift behind them. By draw three it's handing over to green herb, and draw four is warm dry herbs with the memory of citrus somewhere behind. Four draws, two of them good. That's the honest count.

Mid Temp (193°C): Black pepper turns up well-defined and stays put — pepper is the durable heart of this flower and hot walls have no trouble with it. Woody haze sits underneath. Four draws, all consistent, none of them exciting. The bright end has gone and it isn't coming back. What the oven hands you is one blended thing rather than a sequence of layers, which is conduction working exactly as designed.

High Temp (204°C): Earth and toasted herb, a little leather at the back end. Three draws and the bowl is finished. Nothing wrong with any of it — that is what the top of the range is supposed to taste like — it just arrives a good deal earlier than it would on a convection device.

The Verdict: Jack is the strain that shows a device up, and the Mini 2 gets shown up politely. Two proper draws of pine, then the oven takes over, and the presets are too coarse to argue with — there is no 185°C to hide in, only Mode 1, Mode 2, and thirteen degrees of nothing between them. That is the AirPods problem restated as flavour: you recognise the track, you enjoy the track, you do not hear the room it was recorded in. A 6.5 for vapour is the right number, and this is the strain that earns it.

Wedding Cake — Indica-Leaning Hybrid

The Flower: Same jar as every other device on this site. Triangle Kush × Animal Mints, via Triangle Mints #23 — around 24% THC, caryophyllene first, then limonene and myrcene. Dense, squat, greasy nuggets that leave your fingers tacky and your grinder needing a wash. Nose is vanilla and cream over sweet raw dough, with a peppery earth underneath and a cherry-berry edge that turns up on the exhale more than the sniff. Modern dessert genetics doing exactly what it says on the tin. Where Jack exposes a device, this one flatters it.

The Pack: 0.25g again, same half-pack lid, ground a touch coarser because the greasy stuff compresses more than it looks like it will, then packed firm. Oven brushed and the 3D screen popped out between strains — house protocol, and doubly worth it here, because this one's pepper will live in a stainless oven for days if you let it.

Low Temp (180°C): Vanilla and sweet cream from the first draw, and thick for a device this small. Sweet raw dough sits underneath, with a cherry edge that shows up on the exhale. Four draws and it doesn't thin out. Sarah, who does not do tasting notes, said it smelled like a bakery and went back to her book, which is roughly the highest score this device has ever been given in our flat.

Mid Temp (193°C): Butter arrives, then baked cake and warm dough behind it, with pepper emerging late and welcome. Four draws, all of them good. Rich rather than resolved, though — you get warm sweet cream as one satisfying thing rather than vanilla, butter and dough as three separate ones. Whether that reads as a fault depends entirely on what you came for.

High Temp (204°C): Toasted and nutty, with caramelised sugar tipping towards a burnt edge on the last of it. Three draws. Two if you care about the third.

The Verdict: This is the Mini 2 at its best and it isn't close. Dessert genetics and hot walls want the same things, and 89 grams of aluminium turns this flower into something warm, thick and genuinely lovely without asking you to learn anything. The limitation is the one Jack already exposed and it hasn't gone away: richness, not resolution — a glass Arizer would separate these notes and hand you less body doing it. But nobody buys AirPods for the soundstage. They buy them because the thing works, disappears, and comes back out of the pocket whenever it's wanted. On this strain, that's not a compromise. It's the correct answer.

Design & Build (The 'Greenstone' Story) 9.0/10

This is why you're here.

The PAX Mini 2 is the best-designed portable vaporiser I've held. 93 × 30.7 × 21.6mm. Anodised aluminium that feels milled from a single block. No visible seams from the front. Rounded edges that sit in your palm like they were shaped for it. At 89 grams, you keep checking your pocket to make sure it's still there.

Sarah bought the Greenstone without asking. That's never happened with any other vaporiser. Not the Mighty+. Not the Venty. Not the Crafty+. The PAX looked good enough on the website that she added it to a cart and ordered it. That's the design working as intended.

The haptic feedback is subtle and satisfying — a gentle pulse when it's ready, when you change modes, when it powers down. The LED petal display is understated. Everything about the physical interaction feels considered. This is what the PAX money buys you: the feeling that someone cared about every millimetre.

First-timer test: EXCELLENT. Sarah called it "the little one" for three weeks before I told her it had a name. She holds it like a lipstick and that's essentially what it is. One button, draw, done. She didn't need instructions. She didn't ask questions. She used it — which is more than can be said for anything else on the shelf.

Battery & Charging 5.0/10

Sealed. PAX doesn't publish a capacity, and once you've used one you understand why. About an hour of real use, or seven to eight short sessions. This is the AirPods compromise — tiny form factor, tiny battery, charge often.

USB-C charging via the magnetic dock is a welcome upgrade from the original Mini, and a full charge takes about ninety minutes. But the total capacity means you're topping up daily. Heavy users will need to charge between sessions.

The motion-sensing standby helps preserve battery when you're not actively drawing — the device cools between pulls and reheats when it detects motion. Clever. But a cell this small is a cell this small. No software trick fixes physics.

The Spec Check:

  • USB-C: ✓ (magnetic dock)
  • Full Charge: ~90 minutes
  • Pass-Through: Not recommended
  • Replaceable Battery: ✗ (sealed)

The Flowermate Aura has 2600mAh at 90g. The Smono 4 Pro has 3000mAh at 145g. The PAX trades battery for form factor. Know this going in — and read the battery care habits below, because on a cell this small they matter.

Ease of Use 8.0/10

One button. Four modes. Lip sensing. Motion standby. The PAX Mini 2 is the most intuitive portable vaporiser I've used.

Press the button. Wait twenty-odd seconds. Draw. The lip-sensing heater activates when the device touches your lips — no button-holding, no timing. Put it down, it cools. Pick it up, it reheats. The interaction is so natural it barely feels like technology.

The fixed modes simplify decisions. Four heat settings instead of a temperature range. Some users will hate this — experienced vapers want 193°C on a display, not "Mode 2." But beginners? Beginners don't know what 193°C means. They know "mild, medium, strong, maximum." The modes communicate in human language.

Tom's mistake: he loaded 0.5g into an oven designed for 0.25g with the half-pack lid. The flavour was weak because the oven was overpacked and the conduction couldn't distribute evenly. The PAX rewards a fine grind and a proper pack. Read the lid. Use the lid. (The full loading routine, including the mid-bowl stir, is below.)

Cleaning & Maintenance 8.0/10

The 3D oven screen is the PAX Mini 2's most underrated upgrade. The original Mini's flat screen was a resin magnet that required soaking, scraping, and quiet swearing. The 3D screen lifts out cleanly and resists buildup. Regular cleaning — every 3-4 sessions — keeps the PAX performing.

The full daily/weekly/monthly schedule and a step-by-step weekly clean live in the owner's guide cleaning section below. The short version: brush it warm after every session, soak the screen and mouthpiece weekly, pipe-clean the vapour path monthly.

The oven stains cosmetically but functions fine. The mouthpiece is flat metal — no glass to break, no plastic to crack. The simplicity of the design extends to maintenance.

Portability 10/10

Eighty-nine grams. Fits in a closed fist. Fits in a clutch bag. Fits in a shirt pocket. Fits in a coin pocket. The most portable named-brand vaporiser you can buy.

Stealth is near-perfect. From any distance, it looks like a small Bluetooth speaker or a sleek lighter. The flat mouthpiece doesn't protrude. The shape doesn't suggest "vaporiser" to anyone who doesn't already know. One of Sarah's friends thought it was a lipstick. The rest haven't noticed it in her bag at all.

The Flowermate Aura at 90g is 1 gram heavier but pen-shaped. The Aura is more traditionally discrete. The PAX is more beautifully discrete. Different stealth energy — the Aura hides by being ordinary. The PAX hides by being premium.

How I Actually Use This

My Default Setup:

  • Mode: Mode 2 (193°C). The only mode that balances flavour and density
  • Pack: 0.25g fine grind, half-pack lid always
  • Session: Natural 3-minute sessions, 3-4 draws

When I Reach For It: When I'm going somewhere the vape needs to be invisible AND look good doing it. The PAX is the dress shoe of my collection — not what I wear daily, but the right choice for specific occasions. Dinner out. Visiting mates who don't know I vape. Anywhere a Mighty+ would draw stares.

When I Don't: At home. Always at home. The PAX's portability premium is wasted on the sofa. At home, flavour and battery life matter more than size, and the Smono No.3 wins both.

Medical Use Notes

I'm not a doctor. I'm a bloke with chronic pain and ADHD who's been using cannabis medicinally for years now. This is my experience, not medical advice. If you're considering medical cannabis, talk to a prescribing clinic — I've linked some resources at the bottom of this review.

For Pain Management: The PAX Mini 2's simplicity makes it one of the most accessible medical devices. The strain test showed the oven is at its most controlled and most forgiving at Mode 1 and Mode 2, which is where gentle, repeatable daytime dosing lives. For patients who need discrete, portable dosing without the stigma of visible paraphernalia, the PAX is unmatched. The limitation: no fine temperature control means you can't target specific terpene activation points.

For ADHD: The intuitive interface requires zero executive function. Draw. Done. No mode decisions, no temperature calculations, no technique. For ADHD moments when you need to medicate quickly without friction, the PAX removes every barrier except the twenty-odd-second heat-up. The lip-sensing activation means you don't even need to press a button while drawing.

Value for Money 6.0/10

Let's talk about the PAX tax.

Yes, you're paying for the brand. The Smono No.3 does pure convection through titanium and glass for less. The XLUX Roffu does dual-chamber convection for the same money, penny for penny. Both produce better vapour. Both offer more control. Both have bigger batteries.

But if you've ever bought a pair of Nikes instead of running shoes from Sports Direct, you already understand why people buy PAX. The design. The form factor. The feeling when you pull it from your pocket. The look on someone's face when they realise it's a vaporiser. That has value. It's just not vapour-quality value.

The PAX tax is roughly thirty per cent of what you're handing over — that's the design and the badge, and it's precisely the gap between this and the Smono. Whether that's worth it is genuinely personal. Sarah thinks it is. Dave thinks it isn't. They're both right.

The Verdict (The Bookend)

Sarah still uses the Greenstone. She hasn't asked about convection. She hasn't asked about titanium chambers. She hasn't asked about degree-by-degree control. She opens her clutch bag, pulls out something small and green and beautiful, draws, and puts it back. Nobody notices. Nobody asks.

That's the AirPods effect. The specs don't win the argument. The experience wins the argument. You can show someone a frequency response chart that proves a pair of budget Moondrop earbuds technically outperform AirPods Pro. They'll nod. They'll agree with the data. They'll put their AirPods back in.

The PAX Mini 2 doesn't produce the best vapour at the price. It doesn't have the best battery. It doesn't have real temperature control. What it has is 89 grams of aluminium, a twenty-odd-second heat-up, lip-sensing activation, and a form factor that makes every other portable vaporiser look like it was designed by engineers instead of designers.

Every PAX discussion on Reddit ends the same way. "They're fine, but for the money you could get—" and the person holding the PAX smiles and puts it back in their pocket. Because the pocket is the point.

Just one more bowl.

Vs the Competition

PAX Mini 2 vs Smono No.3

The comparison that defines the PAX tax. Less money for pure convection, titanium chamber, glass mouthpiece, degree-by-degree control, and a 3-year warranty. The Smono 3 is a better vaporiser. The PAX is a better object. The Smono 3 is 140g of plastic that produces outstanding flavour. The PAX is 89g of aluminium that fits in a closed fist. Different products for different priorities.

Considerably less money buys a pen-style conduction vape at 90g. Both are conduction, both are tiny, both prioritise form over function. The PAX is dramatically better built (aluminium vs plastic mouthpiece that cracks). The Aura has more battery (2600mAh vs a sealed cell PAX won't quantify). The same money, to the penny — the only device in this review that costs exactly what the PAX costs — and it gives you dual-chamber convection, a removable 18650, OLED, and session plus on-demand modes for it. The Roffu is more capable but 180g and bulkier. The PAX is 89g and gorgeous. If you can fit the Roffu in your pocket, buy the Roffu. If you can't, that's why the PAX exists.

The PAX 4 costs a good deal more and answers a different question. The Mini 2 is the stealth pen-replacement: pocket-sized, simple, designed to disappear. The PAX 4 is the design-led daily driver with a bigger oven, faster heat-up, real-time manual adjustment, and the cleanest, most pocketable full-size PAX yet. Owner's Guide: Getting the Most From Your PAX Mini 2

That's the review. This is the part for when it's already in your pocket. There's not much to learn, and that's the design brief working. But the little there is carries the whole device: nearly every complaint about the Mini 2 comes back to two mistakes made in the first ten minutes of owning one. Get those two right and it performs at its ceiling every time. Where it's annoying, I say so.

The golden rule for the PAX Mini 2: half-pack lid, fine grind, firm pack, stir at halfway. The lid is a performance part, not an accessory. It's the single biggest change you can make to how this device performs.

How to Use the PAX Mini 2: First Use & Setup

  1. Charge it fully on the magnetic dock before your first session. It takes roughly 90 minutes from flat. Check the dock has actually grabbed. A Mini 2 sitting beside its dock charges at zero per cent an hour, and I have done this and then wondered why I had no battery at the pub.
  2. Run one empty cycle on Mode 4 (215°C) with nothing in the oven, and let it time out. Keep a window open, because there's a faint manufacturing smell on the first heat. It doesn't come back. Once it has cooled, brush the oven anyway to start the habit.
  3. Register it the day it arrives. Registration takes the warranty from two years to three. The third year is when a small sealed cell is most likely to go. Registration only succeeds on a genuine device, so it doubles as a free authenticity check.
  4. Fit the half-pack lid, then load 0.25g of fine grind, pressed firm and level.
  5. Press the button once and wait about 22 seconds. The petal display fills and the haptics pulse. Start on Mode 2.
  6. Bring it to your lips and draw. The lip sensor fires the heater on contact, so there's no button to hold and nothing to time. Draw slow and steady for four or five seconds.
  7. Put it down flat between draws. Motion standby cools it when it's still and reheats it when you pick it up. Fidget with it and it stays hot, burning battery you can't spare.

The whole interface in one line: press once, wait for the petals, touch it to your lips, draw. Press again to cycle modes, hold to power off. There's no break-in ritual either. The vapour path is stainless steel and aluminium, with no glass to season. A faint metallic edge on draw one is normal for the first couple of sessions, and by session five you're at the device's ceiling. Still tasting metal or scorch after that? You're overpacking or you skipped the lid. It's almost always the lid.

Is yours genuine? PAX is one of the most counterfeited names in the category. Genuine anodising is even and matte-satin, the same shade under every light, while fakes look slightly glossy or blotchy. There's no visible seam from the front. The button travel is short and identical on every press. The haptic is a damped tap, like a phone rather than a doorbell. The oven has a raised 3D screen in the base. A flat mesh means an original Mini, or something pretending to be a Mini 2.

Storage and flying. Keep it off radiators and car dashboards, because a sealed cell in a small aluminium body heat-soaks fast. If it's going unused for a fortnight or more, empty and brush the oven, wipe the screen, and leave the battery at around half charge. On flights, carry-on only, never the hold. PAX publishes no watt-hour figure, but the whole device weighs 89g, a long way from what the 100 Wh cabin limit exists to catch. Empty the oven before you pack, and take the dock.

Loading & Technique

The Mini 2 is pure conduction. The stainless oven heats, the herb touching the walls heats, and that heat travels inwards through the bed. Everything below follows from that. Grind fine so the heat can travel, pack firm so it has contact to travel through, keep the bed shallow, and stir when the outside is done and the inside isn't. On this device the pack matters more than the draw, which is the opposite of what most people expect. The physics is in conduction vs convection.

  1. Half-pack lid. Always. The 0.5g oven is too deep for conduction to heat evenly. The lid brings the bed down to 0.25g and halves the distance the heat has to travel. Lost yours? A very firm, very level 0.35g pack is the least-bad stopgap until a replacement lid arrives. It's noticeably worse.
  2. Grind fine and consistent. Aim for caster sugar, not cracked pepper, but stop short of dust. Dust restricts airflow and gets past the screen. One big nugget in a fine bed leaves a raw spot you'll taste as thinness. Skip electric blade grinders and scissors, and don't grind a week's worth in advance. Fine-ground herb dries fast, and dry herb goes from flavour to scorch in one mode step. The herb prep guide covers reviving a crispy jar.
  3. Pack firm and level. Coming from convection, this feels wrong. Conduction wants contact, and a loose pack channels: the walls scorch what they touch and the middle stays raw. The oven mouth is small, so grind into the grinder lid, tap it flat, and tip it in with one movement over a tray.
  4. Draw slowly, four to five seconds. A hard, fast pull drags cold air through the bed and drops the wall temperature for the next draw too.
  5. Stir once, at the halfway point. Take the lid off, stir the bed with the pick end of the PAX tool (not a paperclip, which scratches the oven), press it level and put the lid back on. That's twenty seconds. Do it when the vapour first thins, usually after draw three.

Why the stir matters so much: conduction extracts from the outside in. By draw three you have a spent outer ring insulating a barely-touched core, and every draw after that pulls air past used-up material. That's what people mean when they say the Mini 2 "runs out early". It doesn't run out early. It runs out unevenly. Stirred, a bowl goes from four draws with two good ones to six draws with four good ones. The ABV comes out an even mid-brown, not a scorched ring around a green middle, and you can check that after every session.

Back-to-back bowls: the body heat-soaks by draw four and gets properly warm on a second bowl straight after the first. Give it five minutes between bowls. The vapour is better and the shell is cooler. Water pipes and concentrates: don't. There's no official adapter, a 0.25g conduction bowl doesn't make enough vapour to survive water, and the oven is the wrong shape for anything but dry herb.

PAX Mini 2 Temperature Settings

The best temperature for the PAX Mini 2 is Mode 2 (193°C) for most sessions. Start there for three or four draws, stir, then step up to Mode 3 (204°C) for the last two. Use Mode 1 (180°C) for two flavour-first draws on a fresh jar, and save Mode 4 (215°C) for finishing a spent bowl.

There are four fixed modes. Press the button to cycle through them. The petal display shows which mode you're in, not a number. There's no degree readout, no app and no half-steps, so the temperatures below are for your understanding rather than anything you'll see on screen.

Setting What you get When to use it
Mode 1: 180°C Bright top notes, but thin: a terp whisper. Clean, light effect The first two draws of a fresh jar or new strain, and daytime microdosing
Mode 2: 193°C Full but blended flavour, the strain's durable core. Balanced head and body The default. Where most of every bowl should live
Mode 3: 204°C Denser and toasted, with less nuance. A heavier, more body-led effect The last two draws after the stir, and evenings
Mode 4: 215°C Harsh, flat and thorough. Sedating Finishing a bowl that has already given you everything, and the first-use burn-off. Not a "strong setting"

The honest limitation: the problem isn't that there are four presets, it's how far apart they are. Thirteen degrees separate Mode 1 from Mode 2. On a fragile, terpinolene-led sativa like the Jack Herer in the strain test, that gap is the difference between keeping the top notes and losing them. No technique fixes it. You work around it by choosing what you load.

  • Fragile, citrusy sativas: take two draws on Mode 1, then step to Mode 2. Two bright draws is the honest count.
  • Dessert genetics and dense resinous hybrids: this is where the Mini 2 is genuinely lovely. Grind a touch coarser, because greasy material compresses more than it looks like it will.
  • Myrcene-heavy indicas: step from Mode 2 to Mode 3 earlier, around draw three.
  • Dry or older herb: stay on Modes 1 and 2. Dry material scorches at temperatures fresh material handles fine.

The broader theory is in our temperature guide.

Battery Care

The cell is small and sealed, so battery habits matter more here than on any bigger PAX. Put it down between draws so motion standby actually engages. That's the difference between a full evening and a flat device by nine. Live on Mode 2, because Modes 3 and 4 cost noticeably more per bowl. Carry it in a case, not loose in a pocket, because the sensors trigger against fabric. I once spent ten minutes convinced a unit had died. It had spent the afternoon quietly heating itself against a coat lining and run flat. And don't leave it on the dock around the clock. Pass-through isn't recommended, and a small cell held at 100% is a cell you're ageing for nothing. Charge it nightly alongside your phone and you'll stop thinking about it.

How to Clean the PAX Mini 2

To clean the PAX Mini 2, brush the oven while it's still warm after every session. Once a week, let it cool completely, pop out the 3D screen, soak the screen and mouthpiece in 90%+ isopropyl alcohol for 30 minutes, run a pipe cleaner through the vapour path, wipe the oven with a damp cotton bud, dry everything for an hour and run one empty cycle on Mode 4.

The warm brush is the habit that matters most. Reclaim wipes off like butter when it's warm and turns to varnish when it's cold. Do it every time and the weekly soak becomes a formality. General principles are in our cleaning guide.

When What to do Time
Daily: after every session Brush the oven while it's still warm 10 seconds
Every 3–4 sessions Pop the screen and wipe it and the mouthpiece 1 minute
Weekly (regular users) ISO soak of the screen and mouthpiece, plus an oven wipe 30 minutes, mostly waiting
Monthly Run a pipe cleaner through the vapour path 2 minutes
Every 6–12 months Replace the mouthpiece seal ring 1 minute

The weekly clean, step by step:

  1. Let the device cool completely. Keep isopropyl away from a warm sealed battery.
  2. Pop the 3D screen out with the PAX tool. It lifts cleanly, which is the point of the redesign. Don't lever it with a knife.
  3. Soak the screen and mouthpiece in 90%+ isopropyl for 30 minutes, in a glass jar, not plastic.
  4. Run pipe cleaners through the vapour path while they soak: a dampened one, then a dry one, and repeat until the dry one comes out clean.
  5. Wipe the oven with an ISO-dampened cotton bud, holding the device oven-down so nothing runs inwards. Get into the corners where the floor meets the wall.
  6. Rinse the soaked parts and air-dry them for at least an hour. Never reassemble anything damp.
  7. Reassemble and run one empty cycle on Mode 4 to drive off anything left.

What not to do: never submerge the body. It isn't sealed, and the warranty won't cover it. Never soak the seal rings for long, just a brief swish, because long soaks degrade rubber. Never use anything abrasive on the anodised finish, never clean it hot, and never put a paperclip, pin or knife in the oven, because scratched stainless holds reclaim for ever. And your oven will go brown. It turns from bright steel to mottled brown-gold within a few weeks, and no amount of soaking fully reverses it. It's cosmetic, not a fault. Every PAX owner has one panicked weekend of scrubbing. Save yourself the weekend.

PAX Mini 2 Troubleshooting

There's no app and no software layer, so every fault is thermal, mechanical or a warranty claim. Start with the likeliest cause in each row.

Problem Likely cause Fix
Weak, thin vapour from a full oven Overpacked: 0.5g with no half-pack lid Fit the lid and load 0.25g. This is the number one cause by a distance
Vapour dies after three draws The outer ring is spent while the core is still raw Stir at the halfway point: lid off, stir, level, lid on
Scorched or metallic taste Dry herb on Mode 3 or 4, or the oven is overdue a clean Drop to Mode 2, brush the oven warm every session and ISO the screen weekly
Uneven ABV: dark ring, green middle A loose or uneven pack, or the grind is too coarse Grind finer, press firm and level, and stir mid-bowl
Heavy draw resistance Dust past the screen, or a tired mouthpiece seal ring ISO-soak the screen, pipe-clean the path, and replace the seal ring if it's more than 6 months old
Won't charge on the dock It isn't seated magnetically, or reclaim has got on the contacts Reseat it until it grabs. Wipe both sets of contacts with a dry cotton bud, then a barely-damp ISO one
Battery lasts well under an hour Motion standby never engages because it's constantly being handled Put it down between draws, and stay off Modes 3 and 4 for whole bowls
Heats up unprompted in a pocket The sensors are triggering against fabric Carry it in a case or a dedicated pocket, not loose against a phone
Won't respond to the button The firmware has locked up Dock it, leave it two minutes, then remove it and press. If it stays unresponsive, it's a warranty claim
Oven has gone brown and won't come clean Normal cosmetic staining of stainless steel Nothing. Stop scrubbing
The app won't find it The Mini 2 has no app support There's nothing to pair. You're thinking of a different PAX

Warranty and claims. The warranty is two years from purchase, or three with registration. It covers manufacturing defects and electronics, heater and battery failures under normal use. It excludes drops, liquid damage, cosmetic wear, disassembly, grey-market units with no valid invoice, non-ISO solvents, and damage from third-party docks. Bought from us? Email info@herbvape.co.uk with your order number, the serial and a short description of the fault. A short video helps with intermittent charging or sensor faults. We send a UK return label, usually within one working day. Still stuck? Our why isn't this working walkthrough covers the faults shared by all portable vapes.

Parts & Accessories That Fit

  • PAX Half Pack Oven Lid: if yours didn't come with one, buy this first, before anything else on this list.
  • PAX 3D Oven Screen Set: screens are small and easy to lose during a clean, and a clogged one causes draw resistance that's easy to mistake for something worse. Stick to genuine 3D screens. A flat marketplace mesh that happens to fit is not the same part, because the 3D shape spreads heat across the base of the bowl.
  • PAX Basic Maintenance Kit: the pick end of the PAX tool is the right shape for stirring the bowl and lifting the screen without scratching the oven. That's the one part you can't safely improvise.
  • HerbVape Smell-Proof Case (Small): keeps the smell in and, more usefully, stops the sensors firing against pocket fabric. It saves battery as well as keeping it discreet.
  • A second USB-C cable for the dock: boring, and the thing you'll wish you had the first time one dies at 9pm on a night away.

Skip: third-party charging docks, because the magnetic contacts are the one fragile electrical interface on the device. Skip "PAX cleaning solution" too. 90%+ isopropyl from a chemist does the same job.

FAQ

What temperature should I use the PAX Mini 2 at?

Mode 2 (193°C) for most sessions. Take three or four draws there, stir, then step up to Mode 3 (204°C) for the last two. Mode 1 (180°C) is for two flavour-first draws on a fresh jar. Mode 4 (215°C) is only for finishing a spent bowl. Press the button to cycle through the modes. There's no degree readout on the device. The full table is in the temperature settings section.

How do I clean the PAX Mini 2?

Brush the oven while it's still warm after every session. Weekly, let it cool, pop out the 3D screen, soak the screen and mouthpiece in 90%+ isopropyl for 30 minutes and run a pipe cleaner through the vapour path. Wipe the oven with a damp cotton bud, dry everything for an hour, then run one empty cycle on Mode 4. Never submerge the body, and don't worry when the oven goes brown, because that's cosmetic. It's step by step in the cleaning section.

How do I use the PAX Mini 2 for the first time?

Charge it fully on the magnetic dock, which takes about 90 minutes. Run one empty cycle on Mode 4 with a window open. Then fit the half-pack lid, load 0.25g of finely ground herb pressed firm and level, and press the button once. Wait about 22 seconds for the petals to fill, then draw slowly with the mouthpiece against your lips. The lip sensor handles the heating. Put it down between draws so motion standby can do its job.

Do I really need the half-pack lid?

Yes, and it isn't close. The 0.5g oven is too deep for conduction to heat evenly, which is why an overpacked Mini 2 gives weak, thin vapour. With the lid, a 0.25g load gives better flavour, better efficiency and less waste. Fit it before you load, every session.

Why is my PAX Mini 2 vapour weak, or dying after three draws?

In order of likelihood: no half-pack lid, grind too coarse, pack too loose, or drawing too hard. The lid fixes it most of the time. If the bowl dies after three draws, the outer ring is spent and the middle is raw. Stir at the halfway point with the PAX tool and you'll get two more draws with actual flavour in them.

How long does the battery actually last?

About an hour of active use, or seven to eight short sessions. A full charge on the dock takes around 90 minutes. Put it down between draws so motion standby engages, stay on Mode 2, and carry it in a case so the sensors don't fire against your pocket. Otherwise treat it like your phone and charge it overnight. The cell is sealed and pass-through isn't recommended.

Is the PAX tax worth it?

It depends what you're buying. If you're buying vapour quality per pound, no. The Smono No.3 costs less and tastes better. If you're buying the smallest, most beautiful portable vape available, yes. Like AirPods: technically outperformed, practically preferred.

PAX Mini 2, PAX 4 or PAX Plus?

The Mini 2 is the pure portability play: the smallest PAX, with four modes and nothing to configure. The PAX 4 is the step up, with a bigger oven, denser vapour and real-time manual adjustment. The PAX Plus adds app support and concentrate capability, and it's larger and dearer. There's more in our PAX 4 vs PAX Mini 2 head-to-head.
